Soft enamel is a kind of paint applied to the recessed area of metal base. There is a wide variety of metal base suitable for soft enamel: copper, brass, iron, stainless steel, zinc alloy and pewter. Unlike hard enamel and pro-enamel, soft enamel is applied when the metal base is finished with ready plating. Besides, the surface of soft enamel is recessed with metal outline around. The processes of soft enamel workmanship are as below:
- Base Metal Forming: The craft of base metal forming is different according to various material used. For brass, copper, stainless steel, iron and alike sheet metal piece, the forming is achieved by die striking. For zinc alloy, pewter or sandcasting objects, the forming is done by injection or sand casting.
- Finding Attaching/Welding: If finding is required, it should be applied before moving to polishing department.
- Polishing: After the metal base is formed in shape, it should be polished to achieve fine finish.
- Plating: Gold, silver, nickel, brass, antique gold/silver/nickel
- Soft enameling: Soft enamel is the last but one step of the main processes. Enameling is in-filled into the recessed areas of the ready metal base.
- Drying: After infilling, the enameling is to be dried up in an oven.
